Rich, warm colors around softly lighted tables, fiery hand-forged metal sculptures, whimsical art pieces and a "wall of wine" welcome throngs of North County hipsters to this swank yet unpretentious neighborhood eatery. Limited-production boutique varietals, by the bottle or glass, are perfectly paired with owner Jim Barrasso's globally inspired comfort cuisine to highlight Firefly's convivial dynamic. His tasting plates offer an eclectic tour of favorite foods from around the world. Menu standouts include bourbon mustard brined pork medallions pan seared over an inventively delicious cabbage/bacon/pear slaw and Barrasso's signature hazelnut encrusted shrimp and crab scaloppine over pearl pasta with asparagus tips and a smoky tomato coulis. Be prepared to leave room for dessert as this former pastry chef serves up a delectable milk chocolate creme brulee and a gourmet twist on a Mexican favorite: cinnamon churros topped with pineapple-infused chocolate sauce. After work, the separate wine bar and outdoor patio lounge are lively social enclaves where oenophile bartenders serve reasonably priced glasses of everything from Chilean pinots to Monterey zins. -- Aaron Heier
