On the House

It’s Friday at five (or Sunday at noon or any other time for that matter), you’re sitting in your favorite restaurant or bar, and the server or bartender “comps” you a glass of wine. In other words, you get it for free. It’s generally done if you’re a regular at a particular establishment, you’re celebrating a special occasion, or you’ve racked up a pretty good bill. It’s the server or bartender’s way of saying “thanks and we think you’re great”. OK, maybe I just imagine the “you’re great” part; but you know what I mean.

Anyway, at the end of the night (or day), you’re given a bill that doesn’t include the cost of that wine. What do you do about the tip? Here’s an important rule of thumb: Always tip on the full amount – as if you were charged for the freebie. This is true whether you were comped a glass of wine, a slice of pie or an entire meal. Give the server or bartender the same tip you’d have given if you weren’t comped. (At least 20%, now that you are a VIP).

This little bit of dining etiquette will establish you as fun and cool and even more fabulous than you were before. Perhaps more importantly, it will help ensure you get more freebies in the future.

So, get out there and make friends, and take care of the people who take care of you. Which reminds me, I think I have a free drink coming.

Cheers!

Lynne
