Cork it!

The other day I was looking everywhere around my house for a screwdriver (can’t remember exactly why but I’m sure it was important). Never found the tool, but I found hundreds of wine corks in the oddest places. I can’t seem to throw them away, thinking they will be useful one day.

With my new-found surplus, I started developing creative ways to use leftover corks. Here’s my list. May you gain knowledge and have fun from my exhaustive research conducted primarily from my lounge chair.

6 things you can do with a wine cork:

  1. At Christmas time, take a needle and thread, and string a bunch of corks together like a garland to decorate your tree or house.
  2. For those of you with a green thumb; you can put corks on top of the soil in small gardens or planters to help keep the soil moist and create a decorative soil cover.
  3. In the kitchen, you can stick corn-on-the-cob holders in corks to store them safely.
  4. For you artsy-craftsy types, make a bulletin board. If you want to take the easy route, you can actually buy a kit for this.
  5. My personal favorite: get some plain glass votive candle holders, cut some corks in half lengthwise and hot glue them around outside. It’s simple and perfect for any occasion or dinner party!
  6. For all of my green friends who are avid recyclers: Mail your corks to Yemm & Hart, a Missouri company that makes eco- friendly products. They’re experimenting with recycling used corks into flooring and other household products. Very European!

Just think how much space you’ll have in your drawers now. With all these options for using corks, you’ll definitely have to drink some more wine.

Cheers!

Lynne
